- 200 Google Global Business Unit workers are redundant
- It is the third round of dismissal reported from the company in 2025 so far
- Google had previously referred to fewer personnel layers
Google has revealed another reduction in staff affecting approximately 200 workers in its world commercial unit (via PK Press Club).
Workers come from a department responsible for sales and partnerships, redundancies that are part of a broader cost reduction decision with Google which focuses on data centers and AI – a real sign of the time.
In a press release, Google said the changes “would stimulate greater collaboration and expand our ability to quickly and effectively serve our customers”.
Google puts even more workers
This is the last of a series of job cuts from Google, after the company recently dismissed several hundred workers in its Pixel and Android departments, with its HR service also affected earlier in February 2025.
However, this is not a corrective on the widespread dismissals of Google in January 2023, when 12,000 workers were sent home – around 6% of its global workforce.
In December 2024, Google had a little more than 183,000 workers, so although the reduction of 200 workers in the world commercial unit was not significant in terms of percentage, it is always an unwanted decision for all affected people.
Google is not the only company to make regular minor adjustments either. Meta recently dismissed a hundred employees in its reality unit, and 3,600 (5%) earlier in February, when CEO Mark Zuckerberg told workers to prepare for an “intense year”.
Microsoft made two minor adjustments this calendar year (via Layoffs.Fyi), while Amazon and Apple also made some revisions.
When we approached Google for a comment the last time he dismissed the workers, a company spokesperson told us: “Our teams continued to make changes to work more efficiently, to delete diapers and to ensure that they are implemented for long-term success.”
