- Support for older nest thermostats ends this year
- You can take a large reduction on a new model
- No thermostats of new nests will be sold in Europe
There are a few news of the Google Nest thermostat to bring you this weekend: the support ends for the old 1st and 2nd generation models, while Google will completely stop the thermostat in the EU.
First, the end of the support for the 1st generation nest thermostat (launched in 2011) and the 2nd generation nest thermostat (launched in 2012). Google says (via 9TO5google) that there will be no more software updates issued for these devices, from Saturday October 25, 2025.
At this stage, you will no longer be able to control the thermostats of your phone either, and the home / outside modes will also stop working. You can always adjust the modes, schedules, temperatures and settings on real devices.
To help soften the blow, Google offers upgrade discounts on the latest 4th generation nest thermostat for those who have older models: if you are in the United States, you can get $ 130 reduction, which is almost half price.
No-go in Europe
The second news here is that there will be no more new nest thermostats sold in Europe in the future. The 3rd generation model and the Nest thermostat, which was launched respectively in 2015 and 2017, will be all you can get now.
“The heating systems in Europe are unique and have a variety of hardware and software requirements that make it difficult to build for the various sets of houses,” said Google’s declaration.
This means that the new brilliant model, launched last year and describes as a sportsman “an amazing design infused with AI” in our 4th generation thermostat review, will not be available in Europe.
It is not surprising that consumers are wary of investing in Smart Home Tech with abandoned devices and incompatible standards to manage – even the largest companies in the company. It is an area where Google and others can do much better.
