- Gemini visits are up 46% since August according to Similarweb
- Backlash over ChatGPT security features could help Gemini listings
- ChatGPT maintains by far the most loyal user base among AI fans
The latest figures from Similarweb show traffic to Google Gemini reaching 1.1 billion visits per month, a massive 46% increase since August.
Gemini’s rise in popularity seems to be coming at the expense of ChatGPT. Similarweb’s traffic share figures for AI chatbots a month ago showed ChatGPT with 78%, Gemini second with 9.1% and DeepSeek third with 4%. But by October 3, ChatGPT’s traffic share had fallen to 73.8%, Gemini’s to 13.7%, and DeepSeek’s to 3.9%.

The negative reaction of the GPT
It’s highly likely that OpenAI is inadvertently helping Google’s numbers rise due to the continued backlash against its recently introduced security measures, which upgrade users to a special model called GPT-5 Instant, if the the chatbot detects that the user is in distress.

The move is part of ChatGPT’s new approach to supporting users in crisis and offering enhanced parental controls.
A number of ChatGPT users, however, appear furious that the mechanism used to detect when a conversation is drifting into a sensitive area is triggered too easily, disrupting their use of a product they are paying for.
“No one wants your nanny mode; let adults make their own choices! » wrote Claire on X.com, reflecting the mood of many ChatGPT users. “Today, while discussing my creation with 4o, I was redirected to safe mode again. I had to delete and revise my contribution just to continue the conversation with the template I chose.”
Stay faithful
Despite the backlash over ChatGPT’s new “nanny mode,” it turns out that ChatGPT users are much more loyal to the platform than its competitors.
Audience loyalty to GenAI tools: ➡️ ChatGPT has by far the most loyal audience, with 82.2% of its users not visiting any other GenAI site. ➡️ Gemini follows a distant second with 49.1%, showing a much more mixed audience. ➡️ Grok (35.6%), Perplexity (33.1%), and Claude (18%) all have high… pic.twitter.com/vqrXMAWll1October 7, 2025
When comparing AI user loyalty, Similar Web found that ChatGPT had the most loyal user base by far, with 82.2% of its users not visiting any other GenAI sites. Gemini is in second place, but still far behind with 49.1%, followed by Grok (35.6%), Perplexity (33.1%) and Claude (18%).
While the recent increase in Gemini traffic is a reason for Google to celebrate, it still has a long way to go before it can knock ChatGPT from its status as the world’s favorite GenAI tool.
ChatGPT’s online presence continues to dominate the GenAI market according to Similarweb, with 5.9 billion visits in September, compared to 1.1 billion for Gemini. ChatGPT.com was the fifth most popular website on the Internet in September and the only chatbot to make the top 10.
