- Scheduling feature for Google Photos backups spotted

For many users on Android and iOS, Google Photos will be the app of choice for backing up photos and videos to the cloud, and now it looks like those users will have a little more control over how backups actually happen.
As spotted by Android Authority, the latest version of Google Photos for Android includes hidden code that points to a redesign of the backup settings page inside the app, to bring it in line with the expressive UI elements introduced with Android 16.
A new feature is also mentioned: a backup schedule. There’s no information on what it is or how it might work, but it looks like you can choose when your files are synced to the cloud for security reasons.
Perhaps you’ll be able to run backups on a daily or weekly schedule, for example, or perhaps you’ll be able to specify certain times when backups don’t take place (if you have a limited Internet connection, for example, you may want to pause backups).
Future
The way it currently works is that when automatic backups are enabled in Google Photos, your photos and videos are then synced whenever there is an internet connection – although you can configure this to only happen over Wi-Fi (not cellular) connections.
That’s really all the customization you get: automatic backup is turned on or off (you can also run backups manually). There’s no doubt that power users would appreciate a few more options for managing when backups are actually running.
Although the corresponding code is visible in the Google Photos app if you look closely, it is currently not active. It’s unclear when this feature might launch, but if preparations are underway, it will likely be sooner rather than later.
Presumably Google will also provide us with more information when this goes live. In the meantime, look for updates to the appearance of the backup settings page in Google Photos for Android – changes are in progress.
