- Google Monopoly’s search engine market helps its AI strategy, explains the Doj
- Its use of artificial intelligence also supports its search engine
- Google plans to appeal once a final judgment is brought
Google faces an antitrust trial on its alleged abusive use of AI products, which could be perceived as reinforcing its domination in online research – something of which it is already under the microscope.
The Ministry of Justice has decided to break the Google monopoly on the research market, potentially rehabilitating the Internet landscape by giving other companies a chance to embark on action.
With the current investigation, it is not known what consequences could face Google, but it was suggested that it could be forced to sell its Chrome browser to pacification legislators and settle the antitrust survey.
Google’s research monopoly could be stimulated by AI
The DoJ argues that Google’s monopoly improves its AI products, increasing its domination more, but the American agency has suggested that wider and prospective remedies could be necessary due to the growing nature of the generative AI.
MJ’s lawyer David Dahlquist, explained that Google’s research monopoly helps improve its AI products, but they also act as a way to stir up users with the search engine, highlighting the intertwined nature of the company’s products and the complex nature of the trial.
Among the transactions highlighted during the test was the monthly payment from Google to Samsung, which allows the company to pre-install the Gemini AI application on the devices. Payment is equivalent to a “huge sum,” said Dahlquist.
Almost 90% of all online searches use Google (via StatCounter), Chrome representing about two -thirds of all online sessions.
The exclusive Google agreements to be the default search engine have already been criticized in relation to its monopoly, including its $ 20 billion payment in Apple in 2022 (via Bloomberg).
Google said its AI products are not linked to the search engine (via PK Press Club) and that it plans to appeal once a final judgment is made.
