- An unprecedented code suggests that Google can allow users to add cards to Google Wallet by pressing the card on their phone
- We do not yet have a calendar or release date
- The new feature could speed up the addition of new cards to your phone
Google could prepare a modification for the Google Wallet application which would facilitate the addition of contactless payment cards faster.
The unprecedented code discovered by Android Authority suggests that Google could soon allow the addition of cards via a near field communication, or NFC, wireless technology that allows contactless payments.
On a daily basis, this would mean adding a card by pressing the card on the phone as you would on a contactless card reader.
The new option will be apparently found on the “Add a payment method” screen alongside existing methods, such as manual input.
And although NFC has the potential to be much faster than adding the details of your card manually, you may always have to enter your CVV number (or CVC) for security reasons.
The Android report Authority has not found any suggestion concerning compatibility, so we cannot yet say what types of cards and which issuers will be supported.
In addition, it is not mentioned whether this feature will be added with the upcoming version of Android 16, or as part of a smaller update.
How has it not happened yet?
Personally, I have the impression that this rumor seems so logical that it is almost bizarre that it is not already part of the official experience of Google Wallet.
After all, the NFC technology used by contactless cards, phones and card readers works in the same way – nothing prevents a phone from reading a card from a technical point of view.
Speculatively, security problems may have delayed the adoption by Google of the TAG-TOD-ADD function. After all, the functionality must be secure so that the cards cannot be added to a fraudulently phone.
In any case, I would be happy to see this feature coming on Google Wallet – Paying without contact is a practical feature, and this new feature is sure to make things even easier for users of the best Android phones.
