Govt announces the holidays from July 5 to 6 due to Ashura

The federal government announced on public holidays on July 5 and 6 (corresponding to Muharram 9 and 10) to mark Ashura, who commemorates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala.

According to a notification issued by the cabinet division, “the Prime Minister was happy to declare on July 5 and 6, 2025 (Saturday and Sunday) as holidays on the occasion of Ashura (9th and 10th Moharram 1447 Ah).”

The announcement was made during the continuation of the previous circular of the firm division, published on December 23, 2024, describing the calendar of holidays for 2025.

The holidays will apply to all the offices of the federal government. Provincial governments should issue distinct notifications alignment with the federal announcement.

In anticipation of large rallies and processions, the government has tightened security measures across the country, in particular around imambargates. Monitoring has been improved to avoid any unfortunate incident.

Last week, when he chaired a meeting of the federal cabinet, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered the authorities to guarantee a strict law on processions and majority linked to Muharram.

He asked the Minister of the Interior to coordinate with provincial governments, as well as the administrations of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu-et-Cachemire, to maintain peace and security throughout the sacred month.

Mohin Naqvi said that a complete security plan had been finalized to check the disbelievers and ensure high -level monitoring during Muharram.

Earlier this week, during a visit to an Imambargah, the minister said that the security forces had been put in a state of thumbnails to thwart the “harmful designs of loose enemies”.

He also noted that the approval had been granted for the deployment of the Pakistani army in all the provinces, including the Azad Cashmere and the Gilgit-Baltistan, at the request of local administrations.

The army, he added, will remain available to support the civil administration if necessary to ensure peace and order during the month.
