Govt in talks with the IMF to respond to the concerns of solar policy

The Ministry of Energy and the Mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are currently in negotiations to respond to the concerns of the global lender concerning government solar policy.

According to sources, the government makes efforts to resolve the IMF reserves linked to politics.

Sources have revealed that officials of the electricity and oil division division will separate the IMF separately on various issues. The secretary of the electricity division, the oil division and the finance secretary will be present at the briefing, said Express News.

The power division will focus on the performance of nightclubs (distribution companies), circular debt and the privatization process.

The briefing will also cover strategies to reduce line losses, improve collections of electricity bills and limit electricity theft, Express News reported.

Progress on the privatization of three discos and the identification of assets will also be highlighted. Efforts will be made to respond to IMF’s concerns about the government’s solar policy.

In addition, sources have confirmed that the government would discuss plans aimed at reducing electricity prices from 8 to 10 per unit, winning the confidence of officials of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

During the meeting of the oil division, deregulation in the oil and gas sectors will be discussed, in parallel with plans to combat the circular debt of 3 billions of rupees in the gas sector.

The government also intends to provide a briefing on a plan to resolve the circular debt by fixing an average price for local and imported gas. Plans to further divide gas companies belonging to the government and involve the private sector in the purchase and sale of gas will also be taken into account.
