Islamabad:
The federal government plans to impose additional supplements on electricity consumers by modifying the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) law, a decision that would unilaterally increase electricity bills, sources announced on Wednesday.
According to official sources, the amendment proposed to the NEPRA law will allow the government to exceed the current ceiling of 10% on electricity supplements, opening the way to higher costs on consumption bills.
Sources have declared that the government was preparing to remove the existing limit of 10% on the supplements withdrawn through electricity bills, the new legal framework granting a broader authority to determine the tariff increases on a case -by -case basis and for specified durations.
A proposal is also under study to invoice consumers an RS3.23 per additional unit as a supplement. However, a final decision concerning the increase has not yet been made, clarified sources.
In the past, supplements collected from electricity bills have been mainly used to pay interest on the increasing circular debt. The government now aims to completely eliminate the circular debt by borrowing 1,275 billion rupees from commercial banks.
