Govt to restructure district administration

Islamabad:

The federal government has decided to revise the legal and administrative structure of the district administration across the country, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif leading the preparation of the recommendations in a month.

According to a notification of the firm secretariat, a committee of 18 members was set up to examine existing laws and propose reforms aimed at improving governance, services, law and order and application of local and special laws.

Federal Minister of Law Azam Nazeer Tarar will serve as an official, while the Federal Minister for Creation, Ahad Cheema, has been appointed co-conventor of the 18-members committee.

The panel also includes the Attorney General, the key federal secretaries, the chief secretaries of the four provinces, Azad Cachemire and Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as Nabeel Awan, Nasir Mehmood Khosa, Agha Wasif, Pasand Khan Buleidi and Naseem Sadiq.

The Committee was responsible for examining the role of the district administration before and after 2001 and the devolution of powers, comparing the mechanisms for applying the law and public order, and studying the administrative models of other countries.

It is also authorized to propose changes to existing laws, including the Criminal Procedure Code, and to suggest new legislation to strengthen the administration of the district. The firm division will provide secretarial support, while the committee can coopte additional members if necessary.
