Irish footballer Graham Carey has announced the death of his wife, Rachel Borthwick, at the age of 37.
Borthwick died on Sunday, March 22, in Delhi, India, following subsequent treatment for breast cancer.
She battled cancer for four and a half years.
She traveled to India to explore other medical options after learning there were no more treatments available in the UK.
His parents were also present by his side.
In September 2021, the mother of two was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer following the discovery of a lump.
Later, his cancer became undetectable after receiving initial treatment. However, a new tumor was discovered in March 2023.
Taking to social media, Carey, who currently plays for Scottish Championship club Dunfermline Athletic, paid a moving tribute to his wife, writing: “No words can describe the pain and sadness of having to explain to my babies that their beautiful mum and best friend will not be coming home. They are her whole world and always will be. That was her only motivation over the last few years dealing with this horrible illness.”
“Our babies will always remember how incredibly strong and brave you were until the very end. I know you will always look down on them, protect them and guide them. They can take comfort in knowing that their mom is no longer in pain and can now rest in peace. We will always love you more than you can ever imagine,” he added.
In the same article, Carey mentioned that Rachel died peacefully at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, India.
“We want to thank everyone who supported Rachel throughout her journey – through donations, messages, prayers and kindness. It meant more to her and to all of us than we can ever truly express,” he thanked for the tributes and condolences.
