Gwyneth Paltrow makes ‘Love-Hate’ statement about Met Gala

Gwyneth Paltrow has never been one to mince her words, and her feelings about the Met Gala are no different.

The actress and Goop founder, 53, opened up about her complicated history with fashion’s biggest party and made it clear what type of guest she would always be.

Writing on Goop, Paltrow shared her all-time favorite red carpet looks, including two from the annual event. But before she got into fashion, she set the scene: “I have sort of a love-hate relationship with the Met Ball.”

It’s a feeling that goes back further than she wants to admit.

In 2013, Paltrow said The United States today she “wouldn’t go there again”, describing the evening as “very unfun”, “boiling” and “too crowded”.

Obviously, she got over it, she came back in 2017 and came back in 2019.

This 2019 appearance, in a yellow chiffon Chloé dress, is the one she remembers with fondness. She spoke warmly about working with then-creative director Natacha Ramsay-Levi and said she loved the opportunity to work with a female designer.

That year’s theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion, which produced some of the most outrageous looks the event has ever seen, with Lady Gaga and Katy Perry both fully leaning into the show.

Paltrow didn’t.

“I’ll never go to the Met Ball in a hot dog costume or anything, you know?” she said clearly.

“I always have to be myself, first and foremost. Like, I don’t go in a suit, I go in a dress. There are two camps going to the Met Ball, the suit or the evening dress. And I will always be a formal dress person.”

About the Chloé dress itself, she was almost poetic, describing it as “so light and comfortable, chiffon and dreamy”, like “a lemon tart in chiffon”.
