A group of cybercriminals claims to have broken into Adidas and stolen sensitive files, but it appears they only broke into a third-party partner company.
Members of the infamous hacker collective Lapsus$ recently posted a new thread on the BreachForums site, claiming to have infiltrated Adidas’ extranet (a private network that outsiders can still access – in this case, third-party partners) and exfiltrated 815,000 lines of sensitive data.
The data, according to the post, included people’s full names, email addresses, passwords, dates of birth, company and “lots of technical data.”
Who was to blame?
Responding to media inquiries, Adidas said it was investigating the allegations and looking into a violation at one of its partner companies.
“We have been informed of a potential data protection incident at one of our independent licensing partners and distributor of martial arts products,” an Adidas spokesperson said. The register.
“It is an independent company with its own IT systems.”
If the German sportswear giant did not wish to discuss the date of the incident, nor the nature of the intercepted files, it nevertheless stressed that there was “no indication” that the company’s IT infrastructure, its e-commerce platforms or the data of its consumers were affected by this attack.
Lapsus$ is currently one of the most active threat actors, sometimes operating independently and sometimes as part of a larger collective called Scattered Lapsus Hunters.
The group was first spotted in late 2021, when it targeted Brazilian Health Ministry systems. After that, he committed several high-profile breaches, including attacks against Microsoft, Nvidia, and Samsung. It died out in 2022, but reappeared last year.
London police arrested seven people following the attacks, but quickly released them – but have since arrested two more.
