Hamid Raza “surrenders” to police in May 9 case

His brother had previously said he was “arrested” by police on his way to Faisalabad.

Chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and former member of the National Assembly, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, has been taken into custody and transferred to Faisalabad Central Prison to serve a 10-year prison sentence.

Earlier, his brother Sahibzada Hassan Raza said that Hamid Raza was arrested by the police while he was traveling from Peshawar to Faisalabad. However, a message on Hamid Raza’s X account indicated that he was traveling to Faisalabad to surrender to authorities.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan confirmed to the media outside Parliament that “Hamid Raza surrendered – it was entirely his own decision. »

PTI’s Omar Ayub Khan also published an article on the situation, claiming that Hamid Raza was “kidnapped” last night in Islamabad.

“Sahibzada Hamid Raza sahib, my dear friend and colleague, was abducted from Islamabad late last night while he was on his way to surrender following sentencing by an anti-terrorism court in Faisalabad.”

In July, an ATC in Faisalabad had indicted Raza along with several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz and Zartaj Gul, in a case registered the day after May 9.

Hamid Raza was wanted in several cases of vandalism and violent demonstrations and has already been sentenced by an ATC to 10 years in prison. The case was registered at the Civil Lines Police Station.

Sahibzada Hamid Raza had been elected Member of the National Assembly (MNA) from Faisalabad constituency NA-104 in the general elections. Following his disqualification due to his conviction, the Electoral Commission published a timetable for a by-election in his constituency. Two days before Hamid Raza’s arrest, former PTI MP Junaid Afzal Sahi from Faisalabad’s PP-98 constituency – who had been sentenced to three years in prison in the May 9 case – also surrendered to authorities and was later sent to prison.
