- December 2025 Patch Tuesday updates broke MSMQ on Windows Server and enterprise Windows 10 systems, disrupting IIS applications and sites.
- Microsoft is developing a fix but says affected organizations should contact sales support for a workaround or rollback.
- Reported issues include idle queues, write failures, and false “insufficient resources” errors despite adequate capacity.
Microsoft is asking businesses experiencing issues with Message Queuing (MSMQ) to contact us directly for help finding a workaround.
The company recently released its December Patch Tuesday cumulative update, which appears to have broken MSMQ, causing issues in enterprise applications and Internet Information Services (IIS) sites.
MSMQ is a Windows service that allows applications to communicate by sending messages through queues. It enables reliable, asynchronous messaging between systems, even when they are offline, helping to decouple applications and improve resiliency in distributed or enterprise environments.
No deadline for a fix
The patch issues appear to affect users of Windows 10 22H2, Windows Server 2019, and Windows Server 2016 with updates KB5071546, KB5071544, and KB5071543 installed. Private users do not seem to be affected by this, only professional users.
“People using Windows Home or Pro editions on personal devices are very unlikely to experience this issue. This issue primarily affects enterprise or managed IT environments,” Microsoft said.
“A workaround is available for affected devices. To apply the workaround and mitigate this issue in your organization, please contact Microsoft Support for Business.”
Microsoft said it is currently working on a fix, but it is not yet complete. The company doesn’t have a deadline or timeline for releasing the patch, so it’s possible we’ll have to wait for the January 2026 patch batch as well.
For now, IT administrators experiencing these issues should contact Microsoft Business Support for help with a workaround, or even rolling back installed updates.
In the call to businesses, Microsoft said it was aware of various issues following the patch, including inactive MSMQ queues, applications unable to write queues, or sites returning “insufficient resources” errors. Some systems apparently also return “Low disk space or memory” notifications despite having sufficient resources.
