- HBO announced what its next video game adaptation will be
- It is a television sequel to the award-winning title from Larian Studios. Baldur’s Gate 3
- The development will be led by one of The last of us co-showrunners of the show
HBO has revealed that it is preparing a television sequel to the critically acclaimed video game. Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3).
Per Deadline, the famous American television network has announced that it is making a direct sequel to the multi-award winning title from Larian Studios. Craig Mazin, one of the co-creators of HBO The last of us The television adaptation will lead the development of the project. HBO will produce the series alongside Wizards of the Coast and the latter’s parent company, Hasbro Entertainment.
For those who don’t know Baldur’s Gate 3: it is a role-playing game (RPG) set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) in which you create your own character and can play alone or with friends through its 100+ hour story.
Released in late 2023, it received universally positive reviews from fans and critics (read our Baldur’s Gate 3 review to see if we agree with the general consensus). Given the praise he has received, it is no surprise that BG3 dominated many video game awards ceremonies before the end of 2023 – with the RPG taking home multiple awards at The Game Awards, Gold Joystick Awards, and DICE Awards.
In a statement accompanying the reveal, Mazin said: “After spending nearly 1,000 hours in the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3it’s a dream come true to be able to continue the story created by Larian and Wizards of The Coast.
“I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way in which Swen Vincke and his talented team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters with as much respect and love as possible, and I am deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.
Opinion: HBO’s Baldur’s Gate 3 TV Show Will Divide Fans, Like It or Not
As mentioned, unlike the narrative of the story that takes place in Naughty Dog’s The last of us duology, HBO’s point of view BG3 will not be a direct adaptation of his story. Indeed, it will pick up after the latter’s world-changing finale, meaning its televised depiction will be a direct continuation of the story that unfolded in Larian’s RPG.
On the one hand, this is great news for Mazin and everyone associated with Baldur’s Gate 3the TV show. Because they are not required to tell the game’s story, they will have complete creative freedom to take it in any direction they please. When Baldur’s Gate 3The small screen adaptation will eventually be released on HBO Max and other of the world’s top streaming services, and will tell an original story, which should appeal to both new and returning fans.
And I say “should”, because there is no guarantee that BG3 fans will like what they see. Since it’s an RPG, each Baldur’s Gate 3 The player’s story will unfold differently than others. This means that their end game will be their own. However, by adapting BG3HBO runs the risk of alienating and/or antagonizing its longtime fans by making a specific choice BG3 ending the canon via its television adaptation.
The ‘end of canon’ problem is one that Prime Video has also encountered To fall season 2. Since we learned that the final season of this series will take place in New Vegas, aka the main location of Obsidian development Fallout: New Vegas game, fans debated which of its multiple endings would be considered canon by Amazon’s television adaptation. The short answer? None of them, which only served to confuse and frustrate viewers who played Fallout: New Vegasand got an ending that has been their flagship for years.
How will HBO, Mazin and company approach BG3Is this the TV sequel, then? Do they risk the wrath of its fans by selecting one of its many endings as the definitive canon ending? Or do they follow Prime Video’s lead and avoid an issue that will please and annoy fans? We’ll know once Baldur’s Gate 3The TV show arrives years later.
