Hockey News: WHL Player struck unconscious during the fight, taken to the hospital

A junior hockey player was knocked out in a fight on Tuesday evening, which led to the suspension of the match.

The defender of the Americans Tri-City, Terrell Goldsmith, 19, and Ashton Cumby of the Thunderbirds of Seattle dropped the gloves just after a confrontation at the start of the second period.

The pair exchanged blows and the Goldsmith helmet was eliminated. Shortly after his helmet, Cumby won a hard punch that sent the unconscious Goldsmith, while he was first on the ice.

The Americans’ coach ran on the ice, and the Thunderbirds coach also left his respective bench to help Goldsmith. The incident was so scary that the cameras did not show Goldsmith on the ice maintained by coaches. The teammates could clearly be seen frantically called the coaches.

Goldsmith was stretched from ice and would have offered the crowd a boost before being taken to an ambulance.

The Americans posted on X Wednesday morning with an update on Goldsmith.

“Terrell Goldsmith remains at the hospital this morning under observation. Upon his arrival at the hospital last night, he was awake, responsive and in good humor. The Americans of Tri-City appreciate the words of concern and support for Goldsmith. We will continue to update his status,” said the statement.

After the Goldsmith injury, the match was delayed and then suspended. The Western Hockey League said that the match “would be reprogrammed on a later date.”

The Thunderbirds had an advance of 2-0 at the time of the suspension.

“The decision to suspend the WHL game of last night between Seattle and Tri-City was not taken lightly. Following the ice incident, coaches and players of the two clubs were consulted, as well as various civil servants on and off ice in the building and the WHL office,” said the WHL press release.

“Collectively, the decision was made to suspend the game for the sake of the well-being of Terrell Goldsmith as well as the emotional state of the players on the lists of Thunderbirds and the Americans.”

“The match will be reprogrammed on a later date, although these conversations have not yet taken place while we continue to prioritize the well-being of Terrell.”

The Americans published another update on Goldsmith to X on Thursday, where they thanked everyone for their support for Goldsmith and said that he had been released from the hospital on Wednesday evening and resting at home.

When the game resumes, Goldsmith, if he was able to play, and Cumby would not play in the rest of the game, because they both received combat majors and misconduct play for a “staging fight”.

WHL Deems staged fights when players drop the gloves immediately after playing and do not get involved in the room before fighting. The staged fights were prohibited in 2012.

Goldsmith was drafted by Arizona Coyotes, now the Utah hockey club in the Fourth Tour of the NHL 2023 draft. He signed an entry -level contract of three years with the team in October 2024.
