The story

CoinDesk’s annual Consensus Hong Kong conference kicks off this Wednesday with a keynote address from Hong Kong Chief Executive John KC Lee.

Why it matters

Hong Kong plays an interesting role at the intersection of financial services between the East and West of the world. CoinDesk will explore this role at Consensus,

Break it down

We’ll hear from Financial Secretary Paul Chan and Securities and Futures Commission Director-General Julia Leung on the first day of Consensus, and we’ll have conversations about the growth of tokenization of real-world assets, stablecoins, and the evolution of payment systems and how exchange-traded funds (ETFs) will evolve.

Our speakers will include regulators and politicians from around the world, with panels examining how regulators and industry participants approach the sector – a conversation we’ve had every year at Consensus, but which continues to evolve.

Privacy, artificial intelligence, decentralized finance and trading behaviors will also occupy one of the conference’s many stages.

This will be part of a busy week ahead: SEC Chairman Paul Atkins will testify before the House Financial Services and Senate Banking Committees. Although the hearings will focus on SEC oversight in general, expect crypto and Atkins’ efforts to craft rules around the sector to be brought up.

The White House is also hosting another meeting between representatives of the crypto and banking sector. Few details are yet available.
