- Instagram’s new Restyle feature uses Meta AI to edit images and videos for Stories
- You can add, remove or edit any element of the downloaded media
- There are predefined options or you can use your own prompts
Meta has rolled out a new Instagram editing feature in Stories called Restyle, powered by Meta AI, which lets you add, remove, or edit images and videos to match a vision of your imagination (or just delete a photobomber). The tool is rolling out in the United States, although the video editing option is less widely available than the still image feature.
All you have to do is add a photo or video to your story, tap the Restyle icon, and transform your post. The importance of this deployment goes beyond just more fun filters; This could be a major entry point for new users of AI tools who might not care about a single application but regularly share media on Instagram.
How to use Restyle
Here’s how to actually use Restyle. Open Instagram and tap the more Log in on your profile picture to start uploading a story. Choose your photo or video from your camera roll and upload it. In the story editor, look for brush style Makeover icon at the top right. Then choose if you want Add, WithdrawOr Change something, or select one of the predefined styles.
After choosing a style or typing in your choice, simply tap Do and in a few seconds you will see the result. You can do it again by tapping the reload icon to get a slightly different take, or by tapping Undo if you want to revert to the previous version of the image. Once you’re ready, tap Doand you can download the story.
There is also an option Add yours sticker if you want your friends to join the trend and share your story.
For videos, the process is similar, but you’ll see preset effects to choose from, like Underwater, SnowstormOr Fire and flames.
As an example, I took a cute portrait of my dog wearing a bandana and uploaded it. Then I used Makeover to “Remove the bandana,” followed by a request to “Add a superhero costume.”
Meta AI decided that I was literally talking about the world’s most famous superhero. Intellectual property rules are clearly not the first priority of AI in its production. Still, as wonderful as she looked, I didn’t want my dog’s other identity to be Captain Copyright Infringement, so I used Restyle to “Change the superhero emblem to something related to space and dogs.”
I was much happier with this image, so I then asked Makeover to “Change the background to a skyscraper roof.” You can see the result above.
Comic AI
I then turned to the predefined choices to Makeover and chose the sketch option. I wasn’t very impressed, so I used Makeover to “Edit this to look more like a comic book”, which went better, then prompted the AI to “Add details from a comic book called ‘Cosmic Canine’.” It’s not exactly Jack Kirby, but for just a few seconds of waiting, it’s pretty impressive.
Instagram competes for AI photo editing tools that make Restyle necessary for both AI and social media tracking. Google Photos can edit with text prompts, and xAI is aggressively pushing Grok tools on X. And Meta itself has used AI tools in its standalone Meta AI app. But the integration Makeover directly in stories, that’s a much larger number of people who could at least test it.
THE Add yours stickers with your revamped image are clearly aimed at making these AI-enhanced images and the tools behind them go viral.
Of course, because the tool uses your uploaded photo or video as well as text prompts, you trust Meta’s model to match your vision, and any AI tool will sometimes be faulty, or simply rip off existing brands. Still, even if the results fall far short of human-made illustrations or videos in terms of artistic merit, you’ll likely see many people at least try the pre-made options, if only to see what they or their dog looks like as a non-copyrighted felt figurine.
