20 days after sensational goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin fired a 98th-minute header past Thibaut Courtois to send Benfica through to the Champions League knockout stage on goal difference, Real Madrid reluctantly return to the Estadio da Luz ready to face another bout of Jose Mourinho-tinged madness.
It’s easy to forget that moments before Trubin’s exploits, Kylian Mbappé had a perfectly legitimate goal – one that would have completed a hat-trick – scored because he caught both Trubins. And the referee off guard. This sparked a breathtaking chain of events that also included a red-hot Rodrygo that reduced Los Blancos to nine men. Raul Asencio had earlier capped a horrible individual display with an early shower.
Both players are suspended for Tuesday’s clash, which could prove to be a blessing in disguise in Asencio’s case. The Spaniard was targeted to great effect by the Eagles, who claimed a 4-2 victory on the day. This was one of Alvaro Arbeloa’s first matches in charge, although the ship appears to have steadied since its rocky start.
Madrid have won four of their last five in all competitions, and with Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, they are led by the most devastating attacking duo in the Champions League this season. However, no one has been more vulnerable during the break, and Jude Bellingham’s absence is unlikely to help in that regard.
Mourinho prefers clean sheets over goal, but he will have his work cut out explaining that to two-goal star Andreas Schjelderup. The young Norwegian will be keen to relive the night of his life, and faced with a Madrid backline as porous as this one, he should try his luck.
