It was at this tournament two years ago that Luke Littler announced himself to the world and left his indelible mark on darts. He was 16, unclassified and virtually unknown. Fast forward 24 months, and he returns to Ally Pally as the youngest world champion and – newly named – youngest world No.1 in darts history.
His best hope lies in the frustration of his 18-year-old opponent. Littler favors a fast pace, certainly faster than Labanauskas, so the 49-year-old has nothing to lose by taking an extra second here to adjust his feet to the oche, another there to line up, and as many as he dares to walk to and from the target in front of a roaring crowd.
Luke ‘The Nuke’ is leading a field of 128 players in London, aiming to emulate Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson as the fourth player to retain the Sid Waddell Trophy and, incredibly, given all he has achieved in such a short space of time, he is in the form of his life.
2022/23 world champion Michael Smith will also take part in the opening session, against Matchplay women’s world champion Lisa Ashton. Kim Huybrechts versus Arno Merk and Madars Razma versus Jamai van den Herik are the other two scheduled encounters.
