Power: The Fall of Huw Edwards is a new docudrama series from Channel 5 which follows the fall from grace of newsreader Huw Edwards, once one of the BBC’s most trusted faces, following a 2023 report in the Sun newspaper that he allegedly paid a then-vulnerable 17-year-old for sexually explicit images. Doc Martin And Wuthering Heights star Martin Clunes plays Edwards.
Written by Mark Burt, the two-part series was created with detailed input from the anonymous victim, who was named “Ryan Davies” to protect his identity. Channel 5 has defended the controversial docudrama, saying it highlights the “urgent” issue of grooming and online safety.
Edwards disputed the main allegations made in the Sunas the Channel 5 program notes.
Edwards was subsequently arrested in 2024 after investigations in a separate case led to the discovery of WhatsApp messages containing indecent images of children. He pleaded guilty and expressed deep remorse for his actions, after which he was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended for two years.
A bit like Adolescence, Power: The Fall of Huw Edwards focuses on the story from a child’s point of view. “Ryan” said: “I refuse to let Huw Edwards or what he did define who I am or the life I will ever lead again.”
