If the first round thrillers between the Kiwis and Toa Samoa in the Men’s Pacific Cup and the Kiwi Ferns and Fetū Sāmoa in the Women’s Pacific Cup are anything to go by, the gap between the Tier 1 and Tier 2 nations, once a yawning chasm, is shrinking ever closer. And the Pacific Championships themselves played a major role in this.
Comprising four parallel tournaments – the Men’s and Women’s Pacific Cup (the top competition) and the Men’s and Women’s Pacific Bowl – this is only the fourth edition of the men’s event and the second edition of the women’s competition. However, the Pacific Championships have already triggered significant changes in the balance of power.
Former New Zealand internationals Addin Fonua-Blake, Siliva Havili and Jason Taumalolo and former Australian representatives Felise Kaufusi and Daniel Tupou have helped turn Tonga into a real force, and the same goes for Samoa, who can now call on the talents of former Kiwi Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, former Kangaroo Murray Taulagi, Josh Papalii, Payne. Haas and Jérémie Nanai. Three other players from Tonga and five players from Samoa have State of Origin experience.
The same pattern is just beginning to emerge in the women’s game, with former Fern Annetta Nu’uausala and former Jillaroo Taliah Fuimaono now playing for Samoa, and former New Zealand representative Lavinia Tauhalaliku playing for Tonga. Starlets Isaiah Iongi, Isaiya Katoa and Leka Halasima, meanwhile, chose to represent Tonga from the start, as did Samoa youngsters Blaize Talagi and Deine Mariner.
While it is deeply disappointing that the Pacific Championships were not factored into the planning team’s thinking behind Australia’s Ashes series against England, rugby league has never looked healthier in this part of the world.
