THE Mercury Price 2025 is – or so they would have us believe – awarded for artistic merit rather than sales and so winners are traditionally celebrated and denounced in equal measure. But that’s all part of the fun.
The award recognizes the best British or Irish album of the year, across all genres – pop, rock, hip-hop, electronic, jazz, folk, classical, etc. – and even those that defy genres. Perhaps even particularly genre-defying ones.
The other thing that makes this award unique and coveted (despite what non-nominees might say) is that it is only one award. There is nothing for singles, artwork, producers or videos. Just “album of the year”. Plain and simple.
This year the awards will be held outside of London for the first time, as the music world has just realized that there is a world outside of the capital – a fact they could have confirmed by checking where most of their artists actually come from.
Trains were pressed into service to transport the “VIPs” to the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, in the north-east of England, and the city went out of its way to accommodate them. Expect other cities outside of London to also be busy in the future.
