Huawei’s software ambitions are developing quickly. What started as a survival strategy in response to American sanctions has become a bold initiative to position Harmonyos as a dominant operating system through smartphones, tablets, televisions and soon, PCs.
Now aimed at exceeding a billion users, Harmonyos is preparing for a new era of computer after Huawei has lost access to Microsoft Windows licenses.
Originally unveiled in 2019 after seven years of development, Harmonyos, known as Hongmeng In China, Huawei’s response is cut off from Google’s Android ecosystem.
A billion smartphones fueled by Harmonyos
The operating system appeared for the first time on Smart TVS and quickly spread to smartphones in 2021. At the end of 2024, more than 900 million aircraft already operated Harmonyos, this number should cross a million dollars soon.
This rapid adoption is reflected in the mobile performance of Huawei; Its smartphones recently exceeded the Apple in Chinese market share, reaching 19% compared to the 17% of Apple.
This growth has thrown a strong base for Huawei to evolve Harmonyos on more devices while he seeks to unify his ecosystem, reflecting Apple’s transparent integration between iOS, iPados and MacOS.
In March 2025, Huawei’s license to use Microsoft Windows expired. Due to the current American sanctions, the company cannot renew the agreement. As a result, Huawei takes another daring step by replacing Windows with Harmonyos on his future laptops.
The company has already presented a new anonymous laptop during execution Harmonyos 5, also called Harmonyos. Unlike previous versions, this edition is no longer based on Android and is fully developed internally. Huawei should officially launch the device later this month.
The new operating system supports basic productivity tools such as WPS Office and business applications like Dingtalk. Thousands of Harmonyos mobile applications should operate on new laptops, providing users with familiar and mobile experience on desktop devices.
With its large ecosystem, its smartphones covering and beyond, Harmonyos could soon emerge as one of the best Windows alternatives, in particular in regions where access to the operating system of Microsoft is restricted or prohibited.
However, if these laptops continue to use AMD or Intel fleas, users can always have the possibility of installing or double boot windows, or even exploring other Linux distros.
