- Apple celebrates five decades of consumer success as Xerox leadership change shows decline
- Xerox’s landmark research once shaped computer graphics, but failed to achieve lasting commercial dominance
- New CEO inherits a historic brand that’s still largely around but struggling for modern relevance
On the same day that Apple celebrated its 50th anniversary, another name tied to its origin story served as a reminder of how fortunes can change in the world of technology.
Xerox, once one of the most influential forces in the IT industry, announced that its chief executive, Steve Bandrowczak, had resigned effective immediately and would be replaced by its longtime boss, Louie Pastor.
“On behalf of the Board and the entire Xerox team, I want to thank Steve for his leadership during a pivotal period for the company, including the successful acquisitions and integrations of Lexmark and ITsavvy,” said Scott Letier, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Xerox. “Louie brings a strong combination of operational discipline, strategic vision and deep knowledge of Xerox. Throughout his tenure with the company, he has played a pivotal role in advancing our strategy, strengthening our operating model and leading enterprise-wide transformation. The Board is confident that Louie’s leadership and focus on execution will position Xerox well as we continue to build momentum and achieve our strategic and financial goals.”

A rich neighbor named Xerox
“I am honored to assume the role of CEO and lead Xerox into its next chapter,” said Pastor. “Steve’s leadership has been instrumental in strengthening the company’s foundation and positioning Xerox on a path for long-term success. We have a strong team and a clear focus on execution. I look forward to delivering results and delivering on our priorities.”
Leadership changes happen all the time, but the timing adds weight to Xerox’s long decline from an industry pioneer to a company struggling to remain culturally relevant in today’s rapidly changing technological world.
The irony is particularly profound given that Xerox played a direct role in shaping Apple’s identity during the early years of personal computing.
In December 1979, Steve Jobs led Apple engineers to Xerox’s Palo Alto research center, widely known as PARC, where researchers demonstrated technologies that were years ahead of what consumers had seen.
The visit became one of the most retold stories in computing history because it exposed Apple engineers to graphical user interfaces, object-oriented programming, and networking concepts that later became the industry standard.
Bill Gates later described this influence in blunt terms: “Steve, I think it’s more like we both had a rich neighbor named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV and found out you had already stolen it. »
This moment helped define modern computer interfaces, but Xerox struggled to translate its brilliant research into market dominance.
Its Star workstation, an advanced graphics system designed for enterprise environments, had a price that placed it well out of reach for many customers, while Apple sought more accessible machines such as the Lisa and later Macintosh.
Company executives remained focused on copier revenues during the years when personal computing expanded at high speed, leaving much of PARC’s output underutilized or poorly marketed.
Louie Pastor, who previously served as president and chief operating officer of Xerox, overseeing global services and internal operations, inherits a company that still retains business customers but is increasingly seen by many as a relic of the past.
For a company once described as the rich neighbor who invented the future, the latest management shakeup feels less like a new beginning than a new chapter in a sad, slow decline from relevance.
