Hybrid model for the 2025 Champions Trophy? The ICC is expected to respond to the call on November 26

The ICC Board of Directors will meet next week for an emergency meeting to discuss the fate of the 2025 Champions Trophy. PK Press Club has learned that the agenda for the meeting, which is likely to be held on 26 November, is to reach consensus on whether to adopt a hybrid model for the tournament with matches split between hosts Pakistan and a second overseas venue, which has not yet been confirmed .

While several people with knowledge of the discussions confirmed the developments to PK Press Club, an ICC spokesperson said there had been no official communication confirming next week’s meeting. It’s unclear how many boards have been notified of the meeting at this point. A PCB official also said that they have not received any such information as of now.

The ICC Board of Directors includes representatives from the 12 full member countries, three associate representatives, an independent director and the ICC President and CEO.

The meeting was called after the BCCI told the ICC that the Indian government had denied Rohit Sharma’s team permission to travel to Pakistan. This decision came only two weeks ago; the PCB secured the rights to host the eight-team ODI tournament three years ago, in November 2021, and was determined to stage the entire event in Pakistan, across three venues: Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi .

This impasse means that with less than 100 days until the tournament is scheduled to begin – as host, the PCB has scheduled it to run from February 19 to March 9 – there is still no official schedule for the tournament. ‘ICC for the event.

Speaking to the media in Pakistan this week, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said he maintained “positive expectations” regarding the Champions Trophy being held in the country. Naqvi, who is also the head of the Pakistan government’s interior ministry, said he was ready to engage in dialogue with the BCCI to break the deadlock, even as the CPC awaits a response from the ICC to a series of questions on why India cannot travel to Pakistan for the tournament.

This is the second time in consecutive years that the PCB has faced the hybrid model to host a multinational tournament meant to host India. The 2023 Asia Cup was held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka after the Indian team was denied permission to travel to Pakistan. It was Pakistan who traveled between their country and Sri Lanka where the final of the tournament was played. Pakistan traveled to India for the ODI World Cup shortly after that tournament, a move the PCB said it expected would be reciprocated for the Champions Trophy.

Earlier this week, the Indian team was also forced to withdraw from the T20 Blind Cricket World Cup scheduled in Pakistan, after failing to get permission from the Indian government for the team to travel to Pakistan .
