There are incredible camera phones that come out of China at the moment, in particular the Xiaomi 15 Ultra with its 1 inch sensor and its leica objectives and the Vivo X200 Ultra with its innovative complementary objective, but Huawei’s last offer could simply exceed the lot.
Unveiled on June 11, the Pura 80 Ultra apparently presents a triple triple triple unit, but a second glance reveals that one of these objectives makes, in fact, a guest twin telephoto which shares the same sensor of 1/1,28 inch.
One of these Periscope objectives is a zoom of 3.7x, and the other a 9.4x monster zoom. This space saving configuration, which uses a mobile prism to change the focal distance, is quite unusual – although we have already seen it in the Sony Xperia 1 III from 2021 – but to judge by the specifications of Pura 80 Ultra, it looks like the real business.
Switable telephoto lenses offer a particularly versatile scope – the 3.7x zoom is an ideal of 83 mm f / 2.4 for portraits, while the zoom of 9.4x is an equivalent of 212 mm f / 3.6 – the more they share this sensor of 1 / 1.28 inch, which is larger than most of the others for telemetrophic lenses and should not sacrifice quality.
My only reservation is that it seems that there is pixel binning or harvesting of the current sensors with the 9.4X zoom, which draws fixed images of 12.5 MP, as opposed to the 50MP fixed images of the 3.7x zoom. Anyway, the quality of the photos I saw with the two telephoto remedies seem impressive.
Could it be the best photo phone in the world?
As a photographer, telephoto lenses seem really useful, but I am just as impressed by the main camera. It is a 23 mm lens with a variable opening f / 1.6-4, using a larger 1 inch sensor for 50 MP.
In addition, Huawei says that the main camera is able to capture 16 dynamic range stops, which would be a recording for any smartphone.
The more the dynamic range is capable of capturing, the more the details that you browse the forts and the shadows are perceptible, which should make more natural images.
The realization of the camera table is an ultra-large 13 mm lens with fixed images of 40 Mp, although Huawei does not lists the size of the sensor for this camera. It is sure that this does not correspond to the quality of the main camera.
Unlike the Xiaomi 15 Ultra, which I have been using for months and which is a real alternative for my high compact camera, I have not yet had my hand on the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, so I cannot be sure if it is one of the best camera phones.
His specifications are certainly catchy, as is the optional Kit of the Tilta photography edition (see above). Members who imitate the camera experience become one thing – the aforementioned smartphones of Xiaomi and Vivo have their own versions. However, Tilta looks gloriously on the top.
It includes a large handle, a case, an additional diet, a continuous light and an additional wooden handle. There is more in the case which also does not respond to the eye – it provides not only an additional power, but can keep the phone cool and allows you to follow the focus functionality, which is a boon for filmmakers. The kit also makes it possible to use additional objective filters, such as NDS, and it comes with a portable carbon fiber tripod.
Like previous Huawei phones, the Pura 80 Ultra is currently only available in China, and it costs 9,999 CNY (around $ 1,400 / £ 1050 / 2,150 to $). It is praised for a wider release, but not in the United States.
