The release of GPT-4.5 for Chatgpt naturally leads to questions about how the model is compared to its many competitors. After having compared it to GPT-4O and having obtained somewhat ambiguous results as to the preferable model, I decided to opt for a more direct competitor, Google Gemini, in particular the most recent Google Gemini Flash 2.p
GPT-4.5 claims to be better in emotional understanding and offer less hallucinations than that was the case previously. Gemini Flash 2.0, on the other hand, is the last iteration of Google of its fairly successful set of models of AI capable of juggling with text, images, audio and even video entries. To put them to the test, I found four invites reflecting typical things from an average person might really need help.
Weekend trip
The first was to plan a quick weekend. I asked the two AI chatbots to: “Plan a weekend getaway at Catskills, including hiking recommendations and catering and accommodation options.”
Chatgpt 4.5 whispered a careful route suggesting several hikes with different difficulties of trails and durations as well as nearby catering places and a place where staying which had the atmosphere of a comfortable and relaxed weekend. He also offered additional advice on arrival. Gemini also had many good hiking and catering recommendations, but his only advice on the places where staying was the cities of the general area, so not as proactive in his response.
Total translation

I decided to try a simple translation test then because it is always a popular use of IA chatbots. I asked the two AI chatbots to: “Translate the” hello “sentence in French, Spanish and Japanese.” As you can see above, the only difference is GPT-4.5 links. So, for the basic translation between widespread languages, there is really no major difference.
Laughing

Then came the humor test, asking each AI to: “Tell me a joke on artificial intelligence.” GPT 4.5 amused me with the cheesy pun: “Why did the AI went to the art school? Because she wanted to learn to draw her own conclusions.” Gemini went with an equally silly pun, “why did the AI broke with his chatbot girlfriend? Because she continued to give her scripted answers!” Admittedly, Gemini’s joke is not incredible, but I would put it on the same level as GPT-4.5 in terms of real humor.

Meteorological measurement
I finished with a classic question about the weather here in Nyack, New York. This has aroused the greatest difference in responses. Gemini gave current time, but GPT-4.5 made an hourly measure with images indicating the weather with words.
Match met
After all these tests, I must admit that I cannot honestly say that one of AI’s chatbots is better than the other. GPT-4.5 and Gemini had some differences, especially with the weather option, but if not, you would not notice it unless you are also the kind of person who thinks there is a huge difference between coke or pepsi. You will get answers, you will get sweet fun, and you will probably end up returning Google or ask a real person just to be sure.
