This week was wild. Deepseek came and changed the AI landscape, but it seems that the full impact of his arrival is not yet fully understood. Meanwhile, Garmin accidentally broke many of his devices on a global scale thanks to an wandering update, and Android XR broke the coverage in our first practical preview of the software.
All and more news from Big Tech News that you missed for the week are summarized below so that you can catch up with everything, then continue your day.
If you are also looking to catch up with the biggest entertainment of the moment, then Chekc released our choices for the 7 new films and television programs to broadcast this weekend (January 31).
7. Deepseek R1 conquered the world of AI
It was a week of roller coaster for the AI industry with the Deepseek application at the top of the Apple App Store and beating Chatgpt. Deepseek is a Chinese startup that claims to have developed its deep reasoning model, R1, for a fraction of the price that the companies of the American AI have invested in their technologies.
It also offers people free access in its chatbot and at a price much reduced as an application compared to Openai. The news that a Chinese company can produce equivalent technology for a price fraction caused a complete crash of the value of American technological companies which are strongly invested in AI. NVIDIA is particularly abundant with $ 600 billion that has been deleted from their stock value in a single day. The equity prices have since recovered, but it does not seem that the AI market will be the same again.
6. But did he cheat to win?
Questions are already asked about how Deepseek has managed to produce his IA model so quickly, especially after Openai said he had signs of distillation of some of his models. Distillation is a development technique in which you straighten the learning of another model, but is contrary to the terms and conditions of use of Openai. To worsen things for Deepseek, it seems that when it is questioned on the IA model is the best, Deepseek will often qualify as a chatgpt, which some users consider a smoking pistol as a bit.
OPENAI has published a statement on the issue, declaring: “We know that RPC groups are actively working to use methods, including what is known as distillation, to try to reproduce advanced American AI models . We know and examine the indications that Deepseek may have inappropriately distilled our models and share information as we know more. We take aggressive and proactive countermeasures to protect our technology and continue to work closely with the US government to protect the most capable models under construction here. »»
5. Garmin became the sounds of portable devices
A few difficult months of software quirks developed in a huge Garmin failure this week that saw the users of their thousands of people completely lose access to their devices. A rogue GPS file accidentally pushed to Garmins saw user devices plunged into a start -up loop nicknamed the “blue triangle of death”. Few customers have found that they could escape, and even those who have encountered other problems with connectivity and synchronization.
The breakdown lasted much more than 24 hours and we heard hundreds of customers, owners of devices such as the Foreunner and Epix range, as well as more niche devices such as Garmin diving computers, computers cycling and the approach to the golf range.
Garmin has since solved the underlying problem, but many customers remain stuck in start-up loops and without aircraft. Many have even told us that they regretted their purchases from Garmin or plan to leave for companies like Apple. Garmin has a public relations disaster on his hands which has largely overshadowed the launch of instinct 3. The company has a lot of work to do, or he risks becoming the sounds of portable devices.
4. The new NVIDIA RTX 5090 came and came
Nvidia’s new graphics cards are there and … they are already gone, because the stock has sold lightning on the internet for these highly sought -after GPUs. Some will have been purchased by legitimate players who seek to upgrade their platform – and they are delighted with our RTX 5090 review highlighting how it is a very powerful upgrade that approaches the full performance Surex of solid gains also at a more modest price (but still not inexpensive).
Unfortunately, some NVIDIA cards also seem to have been recovered by scalpers by taking advantage of the limited availability to return them for a profit on the resale sites by listing the GPUs for several times their PDSF. The resale sites have also been flooded with lists that seem to sell the new GPUs for the prices closer to what they should cost, but when you look more closely, you will see that they promise to send you a photo of the graphics card that you want rather than the real thing.
Our advice is therefore to wait for another official drop so that you are not deceived by a crook or pay three or four times more for the GPU you are looking for – and you can follow our coverage for updates at the time And where these drops arrive.
3. Nothing on the phone 3 was teased
Nothing shared a short video of his CEO Carl Pei this week. Normally, it would not be very worthy of interest, but as the camera zooms in on its glasses, we see the words “launch of March 4” reflected in the goal. A previous Teaser Nothing Phone 3 suggested that it would be the announcement date of his next smartphone, but now it’s almost certain.
What is more interesting is a cup in the middle of the clip which seems to pass from a shooting of a wide lens, to a telephoto lens – the latter is absent from all phones. We take this as an index that the Nothing 3 phone could have a triple lens camera – with a telephoto camera joining the configuration of the wide and ultra -large lens found on the NOLTHING 2 phone.
2. We had our first in -depth overview of Android XR
Thanks to a practical video of Brownlee brands on its YouTube channel, MKBHD, we had our first overview of Android XR and the prototype of the Moohan project this week. While many details, including the price, the version and certain specifications, are always a mystery, we have seen aspects of the design and the software of the helmet.
It looks a lot like a combination of Meta Quest Pro and Apple Vision Pro. There is no strap in the head, but instead, an adjustable Meta Quest Pro-Like type strap on the back, and the Android XR headset borrows the optional light blockers to change between An optimized VR and optimized design. He also uses an external battery like pro vision to help save weight.
As for software, Brownlee’s video has mainly focused on the integration of Gemini – which seems impressive. Although many features of AI seem to be much better suited to a pair of AR glasses – so even if we expect Moohan to be impressive, we are already waiting to see what the equipment XR Samsung and Google will then throw.
1. Our Spider-Man neighborhood friend has swung
Our favorite superhero in wall refreshment is finally back! Peter Parker’s latest adaptation to enter the fray is in Marvel’s new animated series Your Spider-Man neighborhood friend.
The show has a unique outing calendar, however, because each week, two episodes will be published instead of one – whose first two made their debut on Disney Plus this Wednesday, January 29.
Techradar’s senior entertainment journalist Tom Power has already seen the 10 episodes and says that “spectacularly funny driving” in his Your Spider-Man neighborhood friend goodbye.
This is excellent news for Spidey fans, because two more seasons have been Green-Blindy and the creator of the program already has “big ideas” for where she could go.
