An athlete on the LycĂ©e de l’Illinois trail underwent an unimaginable injury while warming up for triple jump during a competition last month.

Dylan Westcott, from Rock Falls High School, broke his neck in a bizarre accident that left him paralyzed from the chest. The 18 -year -old rehabilitates himself at the Shirley Ryan Abilitylab and was able to sit in a wheelchair for about a week after the March 15 disaster.

Rock Falls High School head coach Eric Bontz shared the horrible details of an interview with KWQC-TV.

“He warmed up in the triple jump, just run, and while he crossed the sand, he stumbled either on his own feet or on the sand, and stumbled, and was sort of running while he stumbled, and just fell his head first in the wall,” said Bontz.

Wescott suffered 12 hours of surgery immediately after the accident, according to the Daily Gazette. He had two cages inserted to stabilize his neck with a vertebra was replaced by a titanium plate.

“You go from a normal and happy family, everyone speaking of future plans and diploma, ball – he has just been accepted to study to be a veterinary technician after high school – then the wheelchair light, unable to do a lot of things he used to do,” said Westcott’s aunt, Kim Wescott Kilday, to The Station. “It really hurts.”
