Pakistan’s Indus Waters Commissioner Mehar Ali Shah on Sunday rejected India’s request to put the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) “on hold”, saying the treaty remains fully valid under international law.

He expressed these views during a program on a private television channel.

“As far as suspension of the treaty is concerned, the word ‘suspension’ is not recognized under international treaty law. It is a made-up term because we believe India understands that it cannot suspend, break or terminate the treaty,” he said.

He warned that India’s continued refusal to cooperate within a rules-based framework was “alarming”.
