IndyCar star Will Power was involved in a horrific crash during qualifying Saturday afternoon before the Indy Children’s Grand Prix of Alabama in Birmingham.

Power was heading into a corner at Barber Motorsports Park when his wheels locked up. He couldn’t make the sharp left turn he needed. Instead, Power crossed the gravel and headed head-on toward the barrier.

He was in the top 10 in qualifying before crashing.

“The brake fell to the ground,” Power said after being allowed to leave the field care center. “I think the front brakes were working, so it was a rear brake failure. That’s all I know.”

Power maintained the car was still good despite not having a “clean lap” during the race weekend so far. He will start 23rd when it goes green on Sunday.

Scott McLaughlin also had a serious crash during testing. He spun around a corner and backed his car into the fence at 150 mph.

He said after the accident that the situation seemed much worse than it actually was. He managed to bounce back a bit during qualifying and will start 14th.

Alex Palou took pole position with David Malukas, Graham Rahal, Marcus Armstrong and Kyle Kirkwood completing the top five.
