Irish superpame Irish boxer John Cooney died at the age of 28 after undergoing brain injury when he defeated the Celtic title against Welsh opponent Nathan Howells last week, announced on Saturday its promoter.
“It is with a complete devastation that we must announce that after a week of struggle for his life, John Cooney unfortunately died,” said Mark Dunlop of MHD promotions on social networks.
The 28 -year -old was at the hospital in Belfast after surgery.
In a previous statement, Cooney’s promoter Mark Dunlop said: “ “ “ Had after the epic fight of John Cooney at Ulster Hall on Saturday evening, Josh was evaluated by the on -site medical team of the British Boxing Board of Control and quickly took to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for for for additional treatment.
“Upon arrival at the RVH, it was discovered that John had an intercranial hemorrhage and had undergone immediate surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
He had left the ring on a stretcher after the fight last Saturday at the city’s Ulster Hall was arrested in the ninth round.
“Such a tragedy to lose this handsome young boxer,” said former world champion of featherweight Barry McGuigan.
