The capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched plans to introduce an electric tram system in Islamabad in the context of wider efforts to modernize and green the city’s public transport infrastructure.
CDA president Mohammad Ali Randhawa confirmed development following a meeting with National Radio Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC) officials on Thursday.
He said that the authority had approved a feasibility study for the electric tramway project, in accordance with the Directives of the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Interior.
“Electric buses are already operational. Now we are heading for electric trams,” said Randhawa. “A feasibility study will help us take the next step.”
According to an ADC press release, Reunion focused on the operationalization of flexible wheel electric trams and the improvement of the existing electric bus network.
Randhawa ordered the departments concerned to finalize the study to allow the tram service to participate in the most frequented corridors in Islamabad.
Sources have indicated that a Chinese consulting company should be put on board to carry out the study. Four roads are initially under study, including one from Rawat to the Mosque Faisal via the highway, and another from Jinnah Square at Islamabad International Airport via Srinagar Highway.
