Islamabad welcomes Gaza ceasefire, calls for peace

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) welcomed the Gaza ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas on January 15, 2025,

The Foreign Ministry expressed hope that the truce announced by Qatar and the United States would pave the way for a permanent ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid to be stepped up to affected Palestinians.

Condemning the “indiscriminate use of force” by Israeli forces, Islamabad highlighted the unprecedented loss of life, the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and the widespread destruction of property.

He describes Israel’s expansionist policy as a destabilizing factor for the entire region.

“Pakistan reiterates its unwavering support for a just, comprehensive and lasting solution to the Palestinian question,” the statement said.

Islamabad advocates for the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

Peace in sight in Gaza as Hamas and Israel sign ceasefire agreement

Qatar and the United States on Wednesday announced an agreement on a ceasefire to suspend the devastating 15-month war in the Gaza enclave from Sunday, after Hamas and Israel agreed to a swap hostages and prisoners.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, interim Hamas leader in Gaza Khalil al-Hayya, US President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump confirmed the ceasefire agreement following intensive negotiations in the Qatari capital.

However, confirmation of the deal was still awaited from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. Israeli officials said the final details were still being ironed out, while President Isaac Herzog appealed to Netanyahu to approve the deal when it was presented to him.

In announcing the deal, US President Joe Biden said a six-week ceasefire would allow negotiations aimed at bringing a permanent end to the war, adding that it would end fighting in Gaza, increase the essential humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians and reunite the hostages with their families.
