- Windows 11 24H2 is automatically deployed to eligible PCs on 22H2 or 23H2
- Persistent bugs such as Asus compatibility and unresponsive camera may delay updates for affected PCs
- 24H2 brings performance improvements and new features, but has been experiencing issues for some time.
If you’re currently using older versions of Windows 11 (such as 23H2 or 22H2), Microsoft has plans for you, as it has started automatically updating PCs to the latest version, 24H2. A notification message has been added to Document “Windows 11, version 24H2 Known issues and notifications” on the Microsoft Learn blog to explain that Microsoft now considers Windows 11 24H2 stable enough to roll out to everyone using eligible Windows 11 PCs.
Those with eligible PCs will be updated to the latest version of 24H2 and those using devices managed by organizations (such as work laptops) will not be affected by this.
However, this push to upgrade older versions of Windows 11 to the 24H2 update might not go very well, as the update itself got off to a rocky start, causing issues like games that crashed. do not work correctly and a malfunction of HDR (intended to improve colors and brightness on screens).
Due to these high-profile issues, a number of people have – understandably – been hesitant to upgrade.
How will this affect you?
As mentioned above, if your PC is eligible and running Windows 11 versions 22H2 or 23H2 (Pro or Home) editions, it will be automatically updated to Windows 11 24H2 very soon. If you’d rather wait, you can apparently delay the update for up to five weeks, as Tom’s Hardware reports. You can do this by following these steps:
1. Open the Settings application.
2. Open the Windows Update section, which is in the left menu (you may need to scroll down).
3. Find it “Pause updates” In this section and in the drop-down menu you can select the number of weeks you want to delay updates (up to 5 weeks).
On the other hand, if you haven’t installed the 24H2 version yet and want to, you can select ‘Check for updates’ on the same Windows Update page as above and click ‘Download and install’ to get the update manually.
Some things to consider and what’s on the horizon for Windows 11 24H2 users
If you own one of Microsoft’s new Copilot+ PCs, designed to incorporate new AI-based features, the 24H2 update will bring the much-discussed (but not as warmly received) Windows Callback feature to all eligible PCs . Recall requires a Copilot+ PC and is currently being previewed with Windows Insider Program members. Reminder is a feature intended to improve the productivity of Windows 11 users by capturing snapshots of their PC activity and making them searchable to make it easier to find past information. Despite the expected benefits, Recall has generated notable controversy due to privacy and security concerns, particularly regarding the possibility of malicious actors gaining access to information stored by Recall.
If you’re not using PC Copilot+, 24H2 still promises to bring improved performance and faster updates for PCs with AMD’s Ryzen processors and running Windows 11. Those with PCs powered by Intel chips will also receive special fixes for Windows 11 24H2. this would ensure optimal performance for its Arrow Lake processors (although it appears this hasn’t led to noticeable improvements for people who have already upgraded).
As for the steady stream of issues we’ve seen over the course of 24H2, it appears that most of them have been resolved thanks to the patches released by Microsoft. Tom’s Hardware looked through Microsoft’s bug log in the document listing known issues and confirmed that this appears to be the case.
However, it appears that some problems persist and have not yet been resolved. For example, some Asus PCs cannot install the update, wallpaper apps may appear unexpectedly, and some PCs may not respond from their camera. If your PC is affected, Microsoft will hold the update and put it on “backup hold” until everything is ready to install.
In short, the update should hopefully improve your PC’s performance (and possibly bring new features), but if you’re wary of the 24/7 automatic update, you’ve got some time. If Windows 11 24H2’s track record so far is anything to go by, Microsoft will need to keep its eye on the ball, stay alert to possible issues, and release fixes as soon as possible if there is an influx of new users performing a upgrade. . Additionally, if you choose to delay updates, you could expose your PC to potential risks that are not considered and may arise unexpectedly. This is why we always recommend upgrading to the latest version of software (especially operating systems) as soon as you can.
