- Leaked renders show the upcoming Lenovo Tab Plus Gen 2
- The big highlight is a massive speaker with the JBL logo
- Also has a built-in kickstand
You’ve heard of pill-shaped speakers, but what about tablet-shaped ones? This and many other puns come to mind when one sees the new tablet-speaker hybrid that Lenovo is rumored to be on the way – and that speaker? It’s huge.
Evan Blass, a long-time and reliable mobile leaker, has shared with Eat your heart out, JBL Authentics 200.
Banish the idea of tablets carrying a series of speakers around the edges and integrated discreetly into the frames, including those in the first generation Tab Plus. No, it’s a fairly thick protruding unit on the back of the tablet, which based on these leaked 3D photos appears to stick out evenly.

Look closely and you will also see a JBL logo on the back – yes. the makers of the Flip 7 apparently had a hand in the audio tuning of this device. The previous model had eight of the brand’s speakers, although they were all integrated into the frame of the slate and did not protrude from the rear.
Two other interesting things to point out in this tour of the tablet: A kickstand allows you to support the slate, so you’re not going to be streaming your music directly onto an oak table. And the volume rocker and power button are also on the back, which indicates how much the speaker protrudes: normally it would be madness to put them on the back, because you’d be pressing them every time the slate was flush with a surface. Obviously the speaker and kickstand system holds the slate so tightly that this doesn’t happen.
Blass didn’t mention any of the tablet’s specs, but you’re probably here for the decks, not the specs.
It’s for the movies
On the surface, a tablet with a big speaker on the back might raise eyebrows: it seems a bit odd and goes against almost every audio improvement we’ve seen in tablets so far. Why is Lenovo making this speaker/tablet Frankenstein’s monster? But the brand’s Tab series has been steadfastly focused on a specific purpose, and when viewed with that in mind, it makes sense.
Like Amazon’s Fire tablets, Lenovo’s are designed for entertainment. Options like the Lenovo Idea Tab Pro and Lenovo Tab P12 Pro have excellent speakers and displays, and the brand’s Legion tablets are primarily focused on the gaming market.
While many brands offer great displays, it’s the speakers that really give Lenovo’s tablets a leg up: the brand installs many of them in its devices and often asks brands to tune them accordingly.
The huge module isn’t much of a hindrance either, as the slate is likely designed to be used with the kickstand. Lenovo is no stranger to this format, as in the Yoga Tab 13, which had a built-in stand as well as a micro-HDMI port so you can connect it to other devices.
So don’t expect the Tab Plus Gen 2 to be a speaker-tablet hybrid; expect it to be designed for watching movies and TV shows with punchy sound.
