A joint investigation team (JIT) summoned the leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-E-insaf (PTI), Omar Ayub and Aleema Khan, for interrogation in a investigation of alleged negative propaganda on social networks, Express News reported sources on Wednesday.
According to the officials, the JIT made a summons to Ayub and Aleema as part of an investigation into the digital content considered to be in violation of the Pakistan cyber-laws.
Aleema Khan was invited to appear today, March 12, while Omar Ayub was called to question tomorrow, March 13.
The federal government has trained the JIT under the 2016 law on the prevention of electronic crimes. The team is led by the Inspector General of Islamabad of the police.
Sources say that the investigators have collected evidence regarding the charges before issuing the quote.
More details on the nature of alleged propaganda and possible legal repercussions remain unclear. Neither Omar Ayub nor Aleema Khan publicly commented on the issue.
Last December, the government launched a strict repression against individuals distributing propaganda on the State and its institutions on social networks, the authorities quickly taking measures to slow down the propagation of false news.
The authorities have identified 12 suspects involved in the circulation of false information and propaganda. The FIRs were deposited against them, with additional legal action in progress.
The individuals identified in the repression include Mehmood Zeeshan Sajid, Faheem Khan, Muhammad Owais, Manocher, Aziz Ahmed, Saad Adnan Khurshid, Muhammad Asad, Malik Ismatullah Khan, Enayatul, Sultan Mehmood Khan, Kalemlalah and Aurangzeb.
The suspects are from various regions, including Karachi, Sanghar, Quetta, Pishin, Qila Abdullah and Swat. They are accused of engaging in activities that define the government, encourage rebellion and disrupt state affairs through inflammatory positions.
