London: FIFTH Seeds Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool crowned their dream summer with Wimbledon Crown and the first Grand Chelem title as a pair when the British team shot Rinky Hijikata and David Pel 6-2 7-6 (3) in the double male final on Saturday.
Queen’s Club and Eastbourne Champions Cash and Glasspool have become the first fully British twinning to win the All England Club trophy since 1936, when Pat Hughes and Raymond Tuckey beat their compatriots Charles Hare and Frank Wilde in the final.
“When you say, it seems incredible,” said Glasspool.
“We had a Brit to win it last year [Henry Patten]The previous year (Neal Skupski) so I didn’t think about it too much, but now we had to give you two, so we did our best. “”
The local favorites fired out of the blocks after an early break thanks to a bad service game of PEL and ran in the opening set with a minimum of agitation, leaving the fans buzzing on a central land bathed in sun.
The Australian-Dutch duo of Hijikata and Pel saved a break in the start of the second set and applied pressure in the fourth game, but their opponents were equal to the task and took a step towards the title when they went 4-2.
Hijikata and Pel, who entered the tournament as an alternatives and survived match points in their first two laps, made a level after eight games before Cash and Glasspool rose equipment in equality to prevail and trigger huge celebrations.
“We played a crazy amount of tennis on the grass, in every match we could,” said Cash.
“So many people were talking, entering this event. There was a lot of pressure on our shoulders. And the fact that we were able to do what everyone was talking about is surreal.”
The finalists cut gay figures despite the defeat.
“We did not even meet before the tournament,” said the 34 -year -old PEL. “I mean, it was the first time that we have been talking about the day the tournament started.”
Hijikata, who won the title of Australian Open 2023 with Jason Kubler, described his All England Club Adventure as “crazy”.
“It was so fun to play with David,” said Hijikata.
“He brought such great energy to the field. He made me very easy for me. It is a dream come true of playing on Center short. A little broken, but it was very fun.”
