In turn, I have kept a list of these averages since the launch of the “bot launched in April 2022, which means that I now have a calculation spreadsheet of 1,221 games per difficulty.
The bad news is that, rather than being simply a statistical anomaly, this difficult race could open the way to a future close to Wordle. My daily advice for prizes may be even more useful from now on.
Hell’s edge month
Regular wordlers will be no doubt about the difficulty of the game last month, with a series of almost impossible words causing all kinds of problems.
There was Tizzy, for example, with his repeated letter Z and on average 4.9, and Poppy with his triple PS and 4.8 score.
Opent may not seem so difficult, but it was a classic example of the games of on -board letters, where the first letter can be modified to make several other words, in this case the joist, the hoist and the humidity; It also arrived at 4.8.
Savvy, with his double VS, also struck this score, while Baler at 4.7 was one of the most nasty ER games that we recently have. The exile (4.6), nervous (4.5) and flying also caused problems, and the fact that Loris (4.2) can be considered easy in this company indicates the overall difficulty.

But the two worst last month was Joungy and Gofer – with scores of 5.2 and 5.6, respectively.
Only 21 games in the history of Bordle managed the 5.0 bar (with nine others in this score), so obtaining two in the space of two weeks is the nightmare fabric.
Jumpy’s problem was that J at first; As my analysis of each response on board shows, I am by far the least common letter of the game, so locating it is rarely easy. The existence of lumps, dumpy and bumpy, will also have been a factor.
With Gofer, during this time, it was the combination of an end of emergency (the most common in the game) and the not so common letters G and F which caused the problem. His score of 5.6 places him as the fourth harder of all time, behind betting, Mummy and Corers, and level with rower.
If you have not resolved any of them – or even all – then it is entirely understandable; Bordle is a simple game, but it can sometimes be diabolically delicate.
Harder than the rest
Wordlebot was not launched until April 2022, a few hundred games in the series, it is therefore possible that December 2021 or March 2022, or another month, is even more difficult. But I doubt it. I have played each batch so far and I lost only once, and I certainly do not remember July 2025.
To confirm my intuition, I completed the average score for each day to obtain the overall average for July, then I repeated the process for each of the 38 other months for which I have all the details.
One thing that I found interesting is that July 2025 was not only the most difficult so far – it was the most difficult so far far.
The overall average for the month of 4.22 may not seem much higher than that of October 2024, the next highest in the list at 4.15, but it is statistically significant since there is only 0.04 between months # 2-7 in the list.
In addition, it is a huge 0.57 supposition more difficult than the easiest month, December 2023 – which arrived at 3.65 – and much higher than the overall average of the game of 3.97.
Difficult times arrive
A notable feature of July Wordles was that there were five “non -original” answers among the 31 games.
When Josh Wardle created Bordle, he and his partner have developed a list of 2,315 words that would form the list of game responses, then planned to appear per day for the next six years.
The New York Times withdrew a few when it bought Losts in 2022, then left the list more or less unchanged for next year. Then, in March 2023, he gave us Guano – the first “additional” solution added to the original swimming pool and the start of a new era for bread.
More followed since then, 17 in total, including jewels such as observation, snafu, bonus and mother, which have all been difficult in its own right. But these words have been spaced, with most months by seeing only one or not at all.
There have been exceptions, with June 2023, November 2024 and May 2025, both having, and January 2025 having three. But obtaining five in a month, as we did in July, was unprecedented.
And all were difficult: the earrings were 4.1, nervous at 4.5, Loris was 4.2, Tizzy 4.9 and Gofer which huge 5.6. The average through these five games was 4.66 drugs; They were all real heads.
And the fact is that the NYT will have to continue to add more over time. This is because we now have 1,500 Wordles, which means that we only have 800 original games left, without an idea of what will happen to the game when this list is exhausted.
The intelligent thing for the NYT to do is to extend it for as long as possible, which means adding more words. And there lies the problem. Wardle’s list already covers many of the most obvious five -letters in English, so we can expect the majority of newly added words to be more difficult than average.
So you can forget the start -up words for classic lots such as Stare, Crane and Slate added – they have all already been and left. Too ultra-communication English words such as the house, today and below; They all made answers to Wordle.
