A sequel to Netflix’s hit animated film Demon Hunters K-Pop has reportedly been confirmed and gotten a release date.
According to Deadline, Demon Hunters K-Pop was officially given the green light by Netflix and Sony, just months after the hit film’s release.
Although details remain scarce, the report indicates that Demon Hunters K-Pop 2 expected to be released sometime in 2029.
Additionally, creator-director Maggie Kang and co-director Chris Appelhans are expected to return for the second installment.
Plans for an animated sequel were being discussed as early as August 28, just days after the original film’s release.
Released on August 23, the Netflix film tells the story of a group of internationally renowned K-Pop idols who lead double lives as demon hunters.
Demon Hunters K-Pop almost immediately became the most-watched film in Netflix history, and its success was bolstered by sing-along screenings in theaters, which reportedly grossed around $20 million in a single weekend.
Following the success of the film, rumors began to circulate that a live-action remake was being considered. However, the film’s creator and director, Maggie Kang, told the BBC she doesn’t like this idea.
“There are so many elements of tone and comedy that are perfect for animation,” she said, adding, “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would seem too grounded. So totally, it wouldn’t work for me.”
Co-director Chris Appelhans agreed, saying, “One of the great things about animation is that you create these incredibly large composites of attributes. Rumi can be this goofy comedian and then sing and do a back kick a second later and then free fall through the sky. The joy of animation is knowing how far you can push and elevate what’s possible. I remember them adapting a lot of different anime and often, It just seems a little stilted.”
