Karachi sees widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms

KARACHI: Rainfall was reported in several parts of the city on Thursday, with intermittent downpours continuing in several areas.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast more rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms in Karachi later today.

Areas such as Surjani town, Gulshan-e-Maymar and their surrounding areas received rains, while thunderstorms were recorded near the airport and Malir. Other localities such as Old Town, Saddar, Korangi, Defense and Clifton also experienced rains.

Intermittent showers were also reported from Malir, Quaidabad, Landhi and PECHS, while Shah Faisal Colony, Nazimabad and Garden experienced rains in stages.

According to the Met Office, the minimum temperature recorded in the city was 23.5 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature is expected to reach 27°C. Humidity levels were recorded at 83%, contributing to the prevailing weather conditions.

The Sindh government is on alert over rains in Karachi, State Minister Sharjeel Memon said. He said advance arrangements to deal with the rainfall have been made, while staff holidays have been cancelled.

Additional dewatering pumps were installed to remove water from low-lying areas, he added. Choke points across the city have been identified, and personnel have been deployed to monitor. The government has placed relevant departments and municipal authorities on high alert, Memon said.
