King Charles was recently faced with an anti-monarchy demonstrator during his visit to Newmarket with the wife Queen Camilla.
The king’s answer to the question sparked a mixed reaction on social networks, his supporters praising him for keeping his composure in the face of an expected situation.
According to local media, the king and his wife met public members on the main street when a man asked him: “Why does your family cost us half a billion books per year, Charles?”
The king, who was escorted by guards and aid, simply hosted his head and said: “Ah, yes”, before going to another group of people.
The demonstrator then continued: “Why do you only pay your gardeners only the minimum wage?”
The video also shows that his supporters offer cries of encouragement, in particular “You Are My King!” And “God bless your majesty!” While Charles and Camilla shake hands.
Commenting on the clip, the CEP of Republic said: “Many people are not satisfied with how the Royals are funded. Most people think they are too expensive.”
He added: “When so many people are struggling with the cost of living, knowing that we pay Charles 27 million pounds sterling from Duchy funds and that he pays a minimum wage to some of his staff is too stomach.”
Meanwhile, activists belonging to an anti-monarchy group, Republic, held signs registered with slogans “not my king” during the visit of the royal couple.
