- Demon Hunters KPop 2 it would be confirmed that the project is moving forward
- Netflix and Sony have signed an agreement which will see the musical sequel arrive in 2029
- Fans can probably expect additional spin-offs and short films in the meantime
Demon Hunters KPop 2 definitely seems to be moving forward, but fans of the demon-hunting animation shouldn’t expect to see it on their screens anytime soon, as Netflix is reportedly eyeing a 2029 release date.
That’s according to Bloomberg, which reported that the world’s top streaming service has finally signed a deal for the sequel with the original film’s creators, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, and production company Sony.
A four-year wait may seem like a long time, but it’s a typical timeline for a major animated film when considering past projects. For example, there was a five-year gap between Sony’s launch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse And Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the latter having become the studio’s highest-grossing animated film to date.
While the news has yet to be confirmed by Sony or Netflix, it will almost certainly continue as the two entertainment giants have been confirmed to have been discussing a deal for a movie sequel since August, so it’s likely that those discussions are finally over.
What can fans expect from a KPop Demon Hunters sequel?
Nobody needed a crystal ball to see that Demon Hunters KPop would get a second act. The film became the most-watched film of all time on Netflix and continues to rank among the most-streamed titles on streaming platforms – without even mentioning the success of its soundtrack or its subsequent cultural cachet.
The film about a female pop trio who saves the world has such a big (and growing) fandom that even Netflix wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming attention it received, with the streamer reversing its unfavorable stance on theatrical releases by bringing an extended version of the megahit to the big screen and retailers scrambling to get their hands on merchandise inspired by the film.
As for the sequel, fans will have to wait until next year to see an official Demon Hunters KPop products (Netflix must be having a field day in the run-up to Christmas), which should help maintain its popularity, but what will it be in the years that follow? Can fans expect to see more Demon Hunters KPop projects?
There is a good chance if reports are to be believed. According to its source, Bloomberg said that Netflix was already considering additional programs, such as a short film, to keep Demon Hunters KPop in the ether.
Based on comments made by co-writer Kang in an interview with Variety earlier this year, a short film, spin-off or TV show seems very likely and is unlikely to impact any ideas being considered for the film’s sequel, as she has previously expressed that there is a lot left on the table.
“We set up so many things for a potential backstory,” Kang said. “Obviously there are a lot of questions that remain unanswered and areas that aren’t explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much film you can tell in 85 minutes.”
This could mean fans can expect several different prequel stories, focusing on other members of the fictional K-pop girl group Huntrix instead of just singer Rumi. Kang said that “we have stories for Zoey and Mira – ones that we actually put in the movie, but it kind of threw them away. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories.”
