- Thinkpad x9 lunar tokens “White Moonlight” bring raw power, but discreet gpu lovers are left in the cold
- Lenovo also removes red and physical track buttons, erase decades of ThinkPad identity
- Four ports on a premium laptop also looks like a design choice made without real users in mind
Lenovo has unveiled a new variant of its flagship range of ThinkPad laptops, but has diverted black, square and functional design principles that have supported it for more than three decades.
The new edition Lenovo Thinkpad X9 will have “White Moonlight” eliminates the emblematic red trackpoint and the physical touchpad buttons – in their place, this device offers an elegant white slab with only four ports.
The absence of a discreet GPU and a premium price, from $ 1810, also makes it a niche option rather than a widely recommended choice.
Design and portability compromise
At only 1.4 kg and a thickness of 6.8 mm slender, the 14 -inch model targets users who appreciate extreme portability and is one of the lightest laptop options that Lenovo has ever produced.
It is delivered with the new ultra basic Intel chips based on the Lunar Lake platform (Core Ultra 7258V and Core Ultra 9 288V processors) and integrated Arc XE2 graphics.
Combined with 32 GB of RAM LPDDR5X and up to 2 TB of SSD PCIE-NVME storage, it can easily manage demanding commercial or creative tasks.
On paper, it checks most of the features expected from a better device focused on the company, because its 2.8K OLED screen with HDR, the cooling rate of 120 Hz and the response time of 1 ms should appeal to professionals who need clarity and speed.
Its acceleration of the AI available, up to 48 highs, is another nod to the crowd of engineering and creative, which makes it a competitor for the best laptop for the needs of engineering students.
However, practicality suffers because radical slimming has a cost. With only two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an HDMI 2.1 port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack, users who count on several external devices such as USB-A devices, SD and Ethernet cards can find disappointing connectivity.
At least, it supports the latest wireless connectivity options, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4.
The biggest bonding point, however, remains the ideological change in design – this machine is less like a continuation of the philosophy of ThinkPad and more like a clean break.
The white finish and the minimalist profile can attract new users, but longtime fans will wonder if the brand has abandoned the very features that have made it emblematic.
