We are only two weeks away from the launch of Crimson Desert (at the time of writing), and based on the trailers released globally, as well as the early previews that a select few have been able to experience, this game is already being compared to GTA 6 in terms of the hype and spectacular vision it could deliver – and that is causing doubt in some.
We’ve all been there: flashy trailers, curated previews, bold promises that build the hype, before reality crashes the dream. While Crimson Desert is not yet launched, some are already preparing for possible disappointment.
For starters, much of the internet has pointed out that despite the console’s promised launch and PSSR support for PS5 Pro scaling, everything that’s been seen of the game so far has been based on PC gameplay. Because PCs can be equipped with absurdly high specs that most normal people don’t have access to, it’s a useful tactic to make their titles look better than they really are.
In response to this, Will Powers, Marketing Director of Pearl Abyss, the team behind Crimson Desertaddressed X to insist: “We are not hiding anything.”
He added: “We will reveal things before launch to give people enough time to pre-order the game for themselves. We say it openly… Let’s cook?”
When this was shared on the Crimson Desert subreddit, he responded, saying that while people have a right to transparency, people “demanding information on their timelines is a right, and it needs to stop.”
There’s a note of exasperation in Powers’ words, and scrolling through his social feeds, it’s clear that he’s been fighting these claims for a while on a few platforms. That said, the simple answer would be to just give us PS5 footage for a game announced in 2019 (which Powers admits was “too early”). It’s not like we didn’t have time to put together a proper trailer for a single PlayStation Direct.
Nothing to hide
At the risk of being proven wrong in two weeks, I don’t think Pearl Abyss has anything to hide.
In footage shared with Digital Foundry, the development team showed the game running at 4K 60fps at Ultra quality settings on years-old technology, including a Ryzen 9 7900X3D and Radeon RX 7900 XTX – a definitely last-gen CPU and GPU pairing.
Look on it
This impressive performance is attributed to Pearl Abyss’ BlackSpace engine, which Crimson Desert runs on. This would give the team much better control over how they can optimize the platform to get the absolute best performance from the systems.
That said, the PC images aren’t the same as the PS5 images, especially since the PC specs above are said to be more powerful than Sony’s console, so hopefully we’ll get a proper look. Crimson Desert soon on console.
Anyway, if you are not sure that Crimson Desert will live up to the hype, just wait. You don’t need to pre-order a game, or even get it on day one. Wait for the first impressions to be published, wait for the reviews, then make your decision; Even if the risk seems low, it is still safer to wait, especially if your budget is not large enough to cover the risk of burns.
