LHC orders Punjab to fix the price of wheat

Islamabad:

The LHC judge, the Sultan Tanvir Ahmad, while announcing a verdict reserved on the petition deposited by the chairman of the board of directors of Kisan, Zafar Hussain, about the non-fix of wheat prices, ordered the Punjab government to implement the law to set the wheat prices.

The court also included in its decision the report of the Department of Agriculture concerning the cost by MANND – 40 kg – of wheat.

He noted that the government’s lawyer said that a law had been promulgated for the determination of prices. However, he said, government institutions have not played their constitutional role.

Citing the report of an agricultural department, he said that the cost per 40 kg of wheat this year is Rs3.533.

The ordinance said that government institutions have recognized that wheat is a vital component of food security. The Chairman of the Kisan Board of Directors approached the LHC on April 8, 2025, against the failure of the provincial government to fix the prices of wheat.
