As if Lindsey Vonn hadn’t endured enough, the skier announced Wednesday that her beloved dog, Leo, had passed away.
Leo died a day after Vonn crashed during a race at the Milan Cortina Olympics, leading to four surgeries already, with more likely.
“02/09/2026 Leo passed away. The day after my accident, I said goodbye to my big boy while I was lying in my hospital bed,” Vonn said. “I’ve been through some of the hardest days of my life and I still haven’t begun to process his passing…I will always love you Leo.”

Vonn said Leo suffered from lung cancer and she had him for 13 years.
Vonn suffered immense Olympic heartbreak on February 8 when she suddenly broke his leg fall during the women’s alpine skiing event earlier at the Milan Cortina 2026 Games. She tried to overcome a torn ACL to reach the podium, but the latest injury set her back even further.
She suffered an ACL injury during training just a week before the Games.

“I haven’t gotten up in over a week…I’ve been in a hospital bed, immobile since my run. And even though I’m not yet able to stand, being back on my floor feels amazing,” she wrote in an article on X earlier this week.
“A big thank you to everyone in Italy for taking good care of me.”
Vonn, 41, had to be airlifted from an Italian mountain during a frightening scene during her downhill competition.
Before the Games started, many wondered how Vonn would ski his ACL tearbut she was determined to try to win a medal in her flagship event. Her races on Friday and Saturday went well, but she lost control a few seconds into her race and things got very serious after that.
