It’s fair to say Liverpool’s form has been a rollercoaster. The Reds have suffered six defeats in their last seven matches in all competitions and are looking to turn things around. Manager Arne Slot is under increasing pressure to avoid losing five league matches in a row for the first time since September 1953.
Liverpool’s 5-1 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League proved a false dawn, as their domestic crisis deepens. Defeats to Brentford in the league and Crystal Palace in the EFL Cup, even with a rotating squad, have put pressure on their Dutch tactician, whose side now sit in seventh place, seven points behind Arsenal.
It has been 72 years since Liverpool last lost five top-flight matches in a row, a fate they now risk repeating. Despite most of their recent defeats at Anfield, the Reds are enduring the worst current run in the league, while Aston Villa arrive in fine form.
Villa’s recent form tells a different story. Emery’s side are unbeaten in six Premier League matches, the second longest streak behind Bournemouth (eight), and have won four in a row, including a 2-1 win at Tottenham and a 1-0 win over Manchester City.
City’s result gives Emery’s troops the chance to become the first team since Leicester in 2016 to beat City and Liverpool in consecutive league matches.
Villa could look to exploit an obvious weakness: teams have played 571 long passes against Liverpool this season (20.5% of total passes), more than against any other team, disrupting their usual rhythm.
However, Liverpool’s record against Aston Villa at Anfield remains strong, despite their recent struggles. The Reds have won six of their last seven home league matches against Villa, drawing one. Before this series, they had gone four matches without a win at home against the visitors.
Villa’s 7-2 victory at Villa Park in October 2020 was a rare exception; in fact, it is their only victory in Liverpool’s last 15 Premier League meetings, which also includes 11 defeats.
